Sounds from a Safe Harbour is honoured to be among the commissioning partners for Wave Movements, co-written by Bryce Dessner (The National) and Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire). The Irish Premiere of Wave Movements will be performed by the RTE National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andre de Ridder with accompanying film made by the celebrated Japanese Photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. The piece is brought to a close with Maddy Prior’s folk vocals casting a subtle narrative light over the entire piece.
Wave Movements has been commissioned by Barbican Centre, Edinburgh International Festival, Cork Opera House, Sydney Festival and St. Denis Festival in collaboration with MET Museum Presents for the NY Philharmonic Contact Ensemble
RTE National Symphony Orchestra
The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra plays a central role in classical music in Ireland through year-long programmes of live performances, schools and educational projects, broadcasts, recordings and new commissions.
Past seasons have included complete cycles of the complete cycles of Bruckner, Prokofiev, Beethoven and Schumann symphonies and of Mozart and Beethoven piano concerti, a Brahmsfest, a Stravinsky retrospective, the orchestral song-cycles of Mahler, Rachmaninov’s complete works for piano and orchestra, world premieres of works by many Irish composers, acclaimed performances of Tristan and Isolde, a performance of Harrison Birtwistle’s Earth Dance, the world premiere of Raymond Deane’s concert-staged opera The Alma Fetish and participation in events with a particular community and/or education focus: Rain Falling Up and Bluebottle.
The orchestra has been critically acclaimed at home and abroad for its recordings across a variety of labels including Naxos, Claves and the RTÉ lyric fm label. Recent releases on the Naxos label include two critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bizet and Dukas with conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud. Recordings on the RTÉ lyric fm label include the Composers of Ireland series, a landmark recording project funded by RTÉ and The Arts Council which to date has recorded works by Gerald Barry, Raymond Deane, Seóirse Bodley, Deirdre Gribbin, Ian Wilson, John Kinsella, Stephen Gardiner, Kevin O’Connell, Donnacha Dennehy and Kevin Volans as well as recordings of selected orchestral works by Aloys Fleischmann, Frederick May and Seán Ó Riada, Finghin Collins: Mozart Piano Concertos and Celine Byrne: For Eternity.
